We know nothing of John Dowland's early life beyond the statements, made in his publications, that he was born in 1563 and studied the 'ingenuous profession of Musicke' from childhood. It used to be thought that he was Irish, but the antiquarian Thomas Fuller thought that he was born in Westminster, and he may have been related to the Dowlands recorded in the parish of St Martin in the Fields.

Most of Dowland's music is for his own instrument, the lute. It includes several books of solo lute works, lute songs (for one voice and lute), part-songs with lute accompaniment, and several pieces for viol consort with lute.
